How movers price a move
Movers usually quote one of 3 ways: by the hour for a local move, by weight and distance for a long-distance one, or as a flat binding estimate. Packing, storage and supplies are usually extra.
Movers that cross state lines have to be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), with a USDOT number and operating authority to move household goods. Ask for the USDOT number and look it up on FMCSA's site before you book.
What to compare between quotes
- Binding or non-binding estimate
- What's included (packing, furniture assembly, stairs)
- How your things are covered if they're damaged
- A USDOT number and FMCSA authority for a move between states
- Deposit and cancellation terms
